Child support is a legal obligation for a parent to provide financial support for the care and well-being of his or her child. It ensures that the child’s basic needs are met, including housing, food, clothing, education, and medical care. Forms of child support:
Temporary child support is an arrangement whereby support is ordered while a divorce or paternity case is pending. It is intended to maintain the child’s standard of living during the proceedings and may be adjusted once a final order is entered.
Basic periodic child support is an arrangement whereby one parent makes regular payments to the other parent for the child’s day-to-day expenses. These payments are typically calculated under Florida’s child support guidelines based on the parents’ incomes, time-sharing schedule, and other statutory factors.
Medical support is an arrangement whereby a parent is required to provide health insurance for the child and to share the cost of uninsured medical, dental, and vision expenses. This obligation is in addition to basic child support and is often ordered as part of the support plan.
Retroactive child support is an arrangement whereby a parent is ordered to pay support for a period before the formal support order was entered. It may cover expenses already incurred by the custodial parent on behalf of the child.
Lump-sum child support is an arrangement whereby a parent satisfies all or part of the support obligation through a single payment or transfer of assets. This type of arrangement is less common and usually requires court approval.
Educational support is an arrangement whereby a parent contributes to the child’s schooling, tutoring, or other educational expenses. In some cases, the court may order support to continue beyond the age of majority if the child remains dependent and enrolled in school.
